Contract Families differ from short-breaks volunteers in that each approved contract family is self-employed and is contracted to provide a specific number of overnight breaks (usually up to 16 nights a month) in return for an annual payment plus expenses for each night completed. These additional expenses are based on the needs of the guest. There is a greater level of commitment required, compared to volunteer hosting and the guests usually have high dependency and complex health care needs. The duration of breaks will vary and contract families may have a succession of guests, to which they have been carefully matched.
This is a rewarding role as it offers a child or young person the opportunity to make new friends and gain independence while allowing parents and other family members to step outside their usual routine.
All contract families are fully checked out and approved and they attend appropriate training to prepare them to welcome their guests in a safe and enjoyable manner.
Contract family schemes are still new to Ireland but they are the fastest growing short break service here, as well as in the UK and elsewhere. They suit guests who require well-supported and personally tailored breaks, and they are often, but not always, provided by people who prefer to work from home, offering reliable, flexible and fun experiences in a family setting. They differ from home-sharing schemes that provide more permanent accommodation.
There are, as yet, limited opportunities to provide contract family short break services to children and adults with disabilities. However, if you are interested in pursuing this career you should either contact a family based short-breaks service near you or contact us using the form below.
